What exactly is a "broadcast quality home studio"?

As a voice actor, having a top of the range recording set-up has been a fundamental part of the job for many years. But wasn’t always this way. Back in the 90’s and early 2000’s voice actors would usually go into Soho or their nearest major city for their sessions. Many of our older and more established artists were making a living back then with no home studio set up at all.

I started in the industry in 2011, in the early days of the online casting revolution, and so one of the first things I did was begin to build a home studio. Now, I don’t say this flippantly - setting up a home studio and learning how to use recording software is not for the faint hearted, and probably deserves a blog post all of it’s own.

Cut to the 2020’s and Covid changed the VO landscape is a massive way. Suddenly having a home studio wasn’t just a nice to have - it was absolutely essential if you wanted to work. And whilst those dark days are thankfully behind us, the pendulum has never completely swung back the other way. Which is why you’ll often see posts from voice actors taking excited selfies in external studios - because now that home studio recordings make up the bulk of our bookings, we love those jobs when we get to wear one hat, and just be the artist again.

So what does it mean to be a voice actor with a broadcast quality home studio? In a nutshell, when you work with me, you're not 'just' getting my voice, and the 14 years of VO experience I have under my belt. You're also getting flawless audio from my purpose build recording studio.

This looks like:
